The main reasons for the shift from trucks to railroads are price difference between trucks and railroads and capacity constraint of trucks.<\/p>\n<p><em>Price difference<\/em> \u2013 Transporting freight by trucks is ten times expensive compared to railroads and is a less preferable means of long haul transport.<sup><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> [<\/span><a id=\"identifier_1_243493\" class=\"footnote-link footnote-identifier-link\" title=\"Cost Per Ton Mile for Four Shipping Modes, January 6 2012, richardtorian.blogspot.in\" href=\"http:\/\/www.trefis.com\/stock\/nsc\/articles\/243493\/investments-by-railroads-and-trucking-constraints-drive-railroad-intermodal-volumes\/2014-06-17#footnote_1_243493\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"color: #0066cc; font-size: small;\">2<\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-size: small;\">]<\/span><\/sup> The price difference is expected to increase in the future driven by the price increase by trucks to counter the rising fuel prices and the declining trucking capacity.<\/p>\n<p><em>Capacity constraints<\/em> \u2013 The trucking industry has seen a 10%-15% decline in its average fleet size.<sup><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> [<\/span><a id=\"identifier_2_243493\" class=\"footnote-link footnote-identifier-link\" title=\"2014 Trucking Outlook \u2013 Q2 Update, April 30 2014, www.spendmatters.com\" href=\"http:\/\/www.trefis.com\/stock\/nsc\/articles\/243493\/investments-by-railroads-and-trucking-constraints-drive-railroad-intermodal-volumes\/2014-06-17#footnote_2_243493\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"color: #0066cc; font-size: small;\">3<\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-size: small;\">]<\/span><\/sup> Though this reduction does not deter the trucking industry\u2019s ability to support the present freight transport requirement, it may lead to a large supply demand gap in the future if the U.S. industrial output continues to grow.
